Well, it’s official. Virtual reality is about to go mainstream and Sony’s PLAYSTATION VR looks to be the frontrunner for the most accessible and affordable option. Today as part of the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC), Sony officially announced that the PLAYSTATION VR will release to the masses in October 2016 at a suggested retail price of $399. Keep in mind you will need a Playstation 4 console, the Playstation Camera accessory, and a Playstation Move controller (or two) which are all sold separately. The $399 price tag is just for the main Headset and everything you see below.
While there will surely be a lot of skeptics out there, I truly believe this is a huge next step for the video game market. Sure it will likely not completely replace classic controller gaming (that’s a thing now!), but it will give players new options and new experiences immersing them in their games to a greater degree. Mark my words…heart attacks will happen as this technology refines itself. It’s kind of a scary thought if you think about it too much. But exciting nonetheless.
