GHOST IN THE SHELL, Manga Entertainment/Production I.G.
**UPDATE 1/13/15** Disney Buena Vista Division has set an official release date for April 14th 2017 for their upcoming live action GHOST IN THE SHELL film starring Scarlett Johansson. Looks like my guess at sometime in 2016 was bogus.**
Being a huge fan of the original Manga and Anime of the same name, I’m not sure how I feel about a live action remake of GHOST IN THE SHELL. It’s such a beautiful book and anime and really does not need the old Hollywood treatment if you ask this old fart. Did we learn nothing from AEON FLUX or DRAGON BALL (yeah remember that one)!? Just read or watch the original and call it a day! But alas, the old Hollywood machine just has to do this and they’ve cast Scarlett (with two t’s mind you) Johansson (with two s’s mind you) to take lead. Cool?
The film will be directed by Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) and follows a cyborg police officer tasked to take down a villainous computer hacker in the not too distant future. Little else is known about the live action reboot at this time. Sure there is potential here, but I’m still pretty damn skeptical until I get some more solid details. Fingers crossed.
GHOST IN THE SHELL (tentative title) will likely hit sometime in 2016.
