Thought the idea of a 4th X-Men movie was out of the question after 2006’s lackluster X-MEN: THE LAST STAND? How about a reboot for the character Deadpool in his very own movie once again starring Ryan Reynolds after his first appearance as the “merc with a mouth” in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE? Well my fellow nerds, it looks like BOTH of these projects are still alive according to producer Lauren Schuler Donner in the latest issue of Empire Magazine (via The Playlist). Here is what Donner had to say about a sequel to X-MEN: THE LAST STAND:
“We took the treatment to Fox and they love it… And X4 leads into X5.”
Not a lot of information I know, but it does officially mean that the project is being pursued with Fox AND that there is a “treatment” that possibly will create not one but two sequels. My ONLY hope with this news (spoiler ahead!) is that they have somehow figured out a way to bring back Cyclops from his confusing death in the third installment. I’m just not sure I want to revisit the franchise without Cyclops and I am more that positive that they could come up with some way to bring him back like Marvel does with so many of the characters in the comics. (Spoiler Over!)
A lot more was said about a potential Deadpool movie. Here is what Donner had to say about that:
“It’s a total reboot…,” adding “it’s insane, it’s definitely comedy. But it’s an R script, it’s really irreverent and violent. Right away, we’re out of the X-Men world.”
That sounds good to me! A reboot from the horrific version of Deadpool we got in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is great news. Making it a comedy and having it rated R is a must, but will marvel go with an R rating? That is something the Wolverine movie could have used very much. Here is what Donner said about Ryan Reynolds involvement:
“He’s very involved, Ryan. He’s working with the writers on the screenplay and it is as much as it is ours,” adding, “I’m tellin’ ya, it’s true to the comic. You’ll see all of them. You’ll see Wade Wilson, the good-looking Ryan Reynolds! You’ll see Deadpool in his costume and you’ll see the cancer-scarred face.”
Let’s hope they follow through and get these projects rolling. I am most excited to see a true sequel to the X-Men movies that does not let me down. Stay tuned for any news for these projects as it becomes available.
