With EA, Bethesda, Microsoft, and Sony conferences all said and done, that leaves us with Ubisoft. We will also cover Nintendo’s less traditional showcase next along with any other big announcements that come along.
Ubisoft started very strong revealing a new team-up with Nintendo. Ubisoft’s Rabbids have infiltrated the Mushroom Kingdom and legendary developer Shigeru Miyamoto was on stage to show us all MARIO + RABBIDS: KINGDOM BATTLE coming to us exclusively for Nintendo Switch on August 29th, 2017. This is a weird little game. It’s a turn-based strategy game featuring our favorite Mario characters with blasters and an assortment of moves and weapons used to battle evil Rabbids. I’m not 100% sure what to make of this game, but it definitely looks colorful and fun. I definitely want to try it out.
Then we of course get our annual dose of ASSASSIN’S CREED with ASSASSIN’S CREED ORIGINS set in ancient Egypt hitting stores on October 27th, 2017. This looks fantastic and being set in Egypt is perfect for this franchise. After taking a pretty big break from this franchise, I think I’m ready to jump back in.
THE CREW 2 had a pretty big showing here, but it’s still not enough to tear me away from FORZA HORIZON and/or MARIO KART. It’s coming early 2018.
The delayed SOUTH PARK: THE FRACTURED BUT WHOLE got a cool new teaser and a new release date set at October 10th, 2017. And we see a little bit on Ubisoft’s upcoming VR game TRANSFERENCE landing Spring 2018.
A new pirate game is coming from Ubisoft called SKULL AND BONES. It’s basically a pirate ship simulation where you lead a crew on the high seas of adventure destroying rival gangs and collecting treasure. While it looks fun, I’m not convinced it would keep my attention for more than a few matches. Kind of reminds me of how I felt about EVOLVE and FOR HONOR. Looks great, sounds great, but may get boring quick. It sets sail Fall 2018.
JUST DANCE 2018. Meh. A SOUTH PARK phone game. Meh. A toy-to-life space battle game called STARLINK: BATTLE FOR ATLAS. Meh. An expansion for STEEP. Meh.
By far the highlight of this show was more footage of FAR CRY 5 which looks absolutely stunning to me! I love this franchise and can’t wait to dive into a new one! Sold!
And the big surprise of the night was BEYOND GOOD + EVIL 2. It’s been almost 15 years since the original and people have been clambering for another ever since. Great to see this finally happening. It’s not quite the follow-up I expected though. It appears to be a prequel set well before the original. This was just a cutscene however. Looked great, would love to see how it plays.
So that’s that. Ubisoft was in line with pretty much all the other conferences delivering a good but not great showcase.
