Out of seemingly nowhere Warner Bros. has officially announced who will play SUPERMAN in the upcoming Zack Snyder (300, WATCHMEN) directed and Christopher Nolan (BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT) produced reboot film. The lucky actor who will be donning the cape will be the young 27 year old British actor Henry Cavill (THE COUNT OF MONTY CRISTO, THE TUDORS).
Cavill is a relative unknown to me and I am not too familiar with his recent work. I saw him as a teenager in THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO and have not seen any episodes of THE TUDORS on Showtime yet but hear good things. I must admit that he does have the young and chiseled look to fit the part and definitely has the necessary jawline for the job. Also, with Zack Snyder AND Christopher Nolan both involved, I trust the talent behind making the final choice. Here are a few words from director Zack Snyder on the casting choice;
“In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”
So there you have it folks. Instead of waiting months and months hearing speculation and rumors Warner Brothers, Snyder, and Nolan have cut to the chase and found their man of steel. Snyder and Nolan are two of my favorite directors today and I have complete faith in them and their ability to make this new SUPERMAN movie something special. I simply cannot wait to see what they create!
The tentative title for the film is SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL and is set to release in December 2012.
