Alright, there has just been a crap ton of movement on the ROBOCOP reboot so I just decided to throw it all into one delicious post. Let me just get one thing straight before we begin. I do NOT think this reboot is necessary and the 1987 original directed by Paul Verhoeven (TOTAL RECALL, STARSHIP TROOPERS) and starring Peter Weller (recently seen on DEXTER!) still stands the test of time as one of my favorite science fiction movies of all time. That said, I am a huge nerd and will surely check this project out when it hits theaters. And that may be sooner than you think since we have a writer, director, star, and a freaking release date! Like it or not nerds, this is happening. Here are the facts so far:
-The ROBOCOP reboot will be directed by relative unknown Jose Padilha (ELITE SQUAD, BUS 174) from a script by another unknown Josh Zetumer who is most noted for penning a script for a DUNE reboot that never came to fruition.
-MGM will be producing the film and Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to distribute.
-Actor Joel Kinnaman (TV’s THE KILLING, SAFE HOUSE) has been officially announced to star as the man himself.
-The new ROBOCOP reboot will be released in the summer on August 9th 2013.
Well there you have it nerds, all the details up to this point. If I were you, I would prepare for a crap ton more information on this project including plot details, more casting news, and possibly some production art. While I am admittedly against this remake, I am curious to see how it all shapes up. It is interesting that the studios have decided to go with relative unknowns for the writer, director and star. Only time will tell if this franchise is dead or alive.
