Ok, initial thoughts…cool.
I don’t think I ever really asked for an Iron Man and Spider-Man team-up on the big screen, but I guess I’ll take it.
There’s no denying that our new Spidey Tom Holland is pretty, err, amazing. For those not keeping score at home, our new Spider-Man debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. And yes, he was pretty great and once again has me excited to see the old (young?) web-slinger on the big screen. While I loved the Tobey Maguire trilogy (yes even 3, leave me alone!), I wasn’t all that jazzed about the Andrew Garfield duo. Either way, I think we can all agree that we want the best Spidey on the big screen as possible, and I think this new one has a lot of potential.
So the above trailer. I enjoyed it. It had a great vibe. I’m glad we get a much younger Peter Parker who’s still swimming in the mess we call High School. I’ll admit it’s a little weird having Tony Stark mentoring Peter, but I guess that’s something we just have to cope with now that he is a part of the grander MCU. It’s a nitpick for sure, but something just feels off about it all.
The costume looks spectacular, and I love the nod to the original design with the webbing under his arms. It looks really cool and makes this version unique. I love how the white eyes focus in and out adding some animation to the masked face too.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Michael Keaton. I mean he’s Batman, he’s Birman, and now he’s Vulture. The dude is oddly typecast for sure. I just don’t know how I feel about this version of Vulture. Smells a lot like Green Goblin from the original SPIDER-MAN and I think they tried way too hard to make this costume look “cool”. Why not just pull out all the stops and give us an elderly madman wearing green spandex with a crooked nose? I would be 100% down for that. Guess the original look for Vulture just wasn’t cool enough. Plus, is Vulture even interesting? I don’t know. I’d take Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom, Carnage, or Rhino over this dude any day. Again, a nitpick.
All in all, nitpicks aside, Spider-Man is back on the big screen and looks cooler than ever. He may be getting shoehorned into this new MCU, but I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. I’m down to give this franchise another shot even if it is the third time now. I have a feeling this version will be sticking around for awhile.
