The roster keeps expanding for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as another well-known team member makes the cut for AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. It’s been reported that actor Paul Bettany (TRANSCENDENCE) has officially been cast as the android superhero Vision for Joss Whedon’s upcoming sequel. As you all may know, Bettany is no stranger to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played Tony Stark’s helpful A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. in not only the first AVENGERS movie, but all three IRON MAN films.
In the comics, Vision began his existence as a creation and servant of the villainous robotic tyrant Ultron before switching sides and becoming a member of the Avengers. He also had a tumultuous romantic relationship with the mutant super heroine and teammate Scarlet Witch. What’s interesting is the mystery surrounding the origins of both Ultron and Vision in the film. In the original comics, Ultron was created by the superhero scientist Hank Pym a.k.a. Ant-Man (set to be played by Michael Douglas in his own Marvel film a couple of months after AGE OF ULTRON). This has led some fans to speculate whether Pym will not be involved in the villain’s (and therefore, Vision’s) genesis and that the role of “creator” has been passed to a tech-savvy character like Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man. If this is the case, the casting of Bettany makes perfect sense as this cinematic version of Vision may very well be the next step or evolution of the J.A.R.V.I.S. program. Who knows? Why can’t it be next year already?!
Bettany joins the returning team from the first AVENGERS as well as new cast members such as James Spader (THE BLACKLIST) as lead baddie Ultron, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen (GODZILLA) as the mutant brother/sister duo of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and Thomas Kretschmann (OPEN GRAVE) as the evil Baron Wolfgang von Strucker.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is set for a May, 1 2015 release!
