Well I didn’t see this coming.

AMC has officially announced that it is in “the initial stages of developing a companion series” for their hugely successful show THE WALKING DEAD and it’s tentatively set to air in 2015. Cool, I think. It looks like the original comic book creator and writer Robert Kirkman is deeply involved which is good news for long-time fans. Here’s a bit of what he had to say about this new project:

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman in a statement included the network’s announcement, adding that “the opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.” AMC president Charlie Collier says the show will feature “an entirely new story and cast of characters,” while offering “another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Hmm. Seems pretty vague at the moment, but promising. Perhaps a different county and a whole new group of meat sacks to mutilate could be fun. I guess what we are basically getting is just a brand new zombie apocalypse show with the WALKING DEAD brand smacked on the surface to tap into that immediate fan base. Why start from scratch when the fans are already there frothing at the mouth? Some will say this is a smart move by AMC whilst others will likely see it as a cash grab. I say good TV is good TV. Just give me some interesting characters, an involved story, lots of deaths, a bucket of popcorn, and the damn zombies and I’m good to go. Only time will tell if this will be a good move on AMC’s part, or if they are giving us too much of a good thing. For now, I will remain skeptical and eager for new details as the rise from the grave.

Season 4 of AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD premiers October 13th 2013.
