UPDATE – G.I. JOE: RETALIATION got delayed until March 29th 2013 in order to get the 3D treatment.

The summer 2012 blockbuster movie season is almost upon us and my inner nerd child could not be happier. Last year is going to be extremely hard to beat. You can see why by checking out my Top 10 Summer Blockbusters of 2011 list right HERE. Below are my top 5 choices for most anticipated blockbusters for 2012. Sure this list may be a little obvious, but alas, I am a nerd and this is a nerd news website. I highly encourage anyone reading this to sound off in the comments section below with their very own top 5 list. Until then, enjoy my list and have fun this summer at the movies!

Ok sure, I’ll admit that relaunching this franchise now is a bit premature, but come on people it’s Spider-Man we’re talking about here! I love Spider-Man. He is really cool and if they are not going to move forward with the cast and crew from the previous installments, then let’s get this new series going. I’m really rooting for this one to be great, I’m just not convinced yet. I fear no trailer is really going to convince me and I’m just going to have to see the final film before I can decide. While I am skeptical, I will be there day once to see if Spidey’s new adventure is worthwhile.

Blah, Blah, Blah, you didn’t like the first G.I. Joe movie I know you told me a million times. Guess what? I did. I adore the G.I. Joe franchise and all the characters involved and any chance I get to see them in a big budget live action movie is alright with me. It’s a movie based off a toy line for craps sake! I will tell you what you CAN look forward too fan of the original or not; a revamped story that starts at square one, a bad ass looking Snake Eyes without those stupid lips put on his mask, Storm Shadow back and ready to get some sweet ninja revenge, Dwane Johnson as Roadblock, Bruce Willis as the original Joe, AND last, but not least, Cobra Commander in his sweet as hell classic costume (see above)! There, now you know this movie is going to be awesome, and knowing is half the battle. Eat it!

Do I really need to explain myself here? This is the third, and final, chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Batman epic. While I have not witnessed anything just yet to get my gears going, I just know and have faith that Nolan has something brilliant up his sleeve. THE DARK KNIGHT is seriously one of the best films I have ever seen and it is going to be incredibly hard to top that success. All I can say is that I will be there on day one to see how it all unfolds and I could not be more excited. I’M  BATMAN!

PROMETHEUS looks to be an instant classic. Everything I have seen in the trailers and marketing campaign for this one looks extremely promising. I am a huge fan of sci-fi and I am eager to see what director Ridley Scott has in store for us, especially after his success in the genre with the phenomenal BLADE RUNNER and ALIEN. I’ve got a good feeling about this one.

It has been a long time since my inner nerd has been THIS excited for a movie. Sometimes I find it hard to believe that Marvel is even pulling this thing off! This is like a nerds wet dream come true people! Marvel took the time to establish their heroes Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor in their very own films only to one day put them all together in a movie event unlike anything seen or attempted before called THE AVENGERS. The cherry on top is that this film is being directed by nerd god Joss Whedon (FIREFLY, SERENITY). I am simply beside myself with anticipation for this one and the wait is almost over. On May 4th 2012 THE AVENGERS will hit theaters kick starting the 2012 summer blockbuster season. I can’t wait. Avengers Assemble!

There were a lot of movies I wanted to add to this list such as BATTLESHIP, ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER, and THE EXPENDABLES 2, but I could only choose 5 and these are my picks. As I said before, I encourage you to tell us your top 5 in the comments below. One thing is for certain, this summer is going to rock!
