Marvel has been teasing for awhile now that it has something big in store for 2012. Courtesy of USA Today, it has been revealed that Marvel will be pitting their two most famous super hero teams up against one another come Spring of 2012. The X-Men will be facing off against The Avengers in a comic book crossover of epic proportions!

The title of the mini series will simply be called AVENGERS VS X-MEN and will be co-written by some of Marvels most popular mainstays including Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Brian Michael Bendis, and Jonathan Hickman. The artist involved are series favorites John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel, and Adam Kubert (yay!). The series will be 12 issues long and will be distributed bi-weekly starting in March 2012. To kick things off, Marvel will be releasing a special #0 issue in March 2012.

Here is the official story synopsis thanks to Marvel.com:

“The Avengers and X-Men have learned that the all-powerful embodiment of both death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force is on a crash course for Earth…and it needs a new host to unleash its immeasurable power. But what is the shocking decision tied to the Phoenix’s return that will pit the Avengers against the X-Men? And when good friends become bitter enemies, what does this mean for the future of the Marvel Universe?”

Sounds pretty fun if you ask me. I have been a loyal follower of all things X-Men pretty much my entire life and I can’t wait to see my mutants kick some super human ass! I never really followed The Avengers in the comic book realm, but I must admit the recent film adaptations have made me a fan. When the dust settles, NOTHING compares to my love for Cyclops and his X-Men! I have been catching up on X-Men the past few months and it has been pretty exciting. Hope Summers is a pretty interesting character that has been poised to take on the Phoenix Force for years now and it looks like Marvel is ready for the payoff! Unless they decide to throw a curve ball and give the all powerful Phoenix Force to an unpredictable character. In any case, this is must read event that will surely have repercussions that will echo throughout the entire Marvel universe.

Get ready for this epic event starting in March 2012. In the mean time, Marvel has recently created some pretty easy “jumping on” points for all the X-Men books. I recommend reading the new UNCANNY X-MEN #1, WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #1, and anything ASTONISHING X-MEN (currently at #44) if you want to keep up.

Hopefully AVENGERS vs X-MEN will be an OPTIC BLAST!! (I had to)
