Last summer it was announced that Nickelodeon was working on an animated sequel series to the wildly popular AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER series.  The original show ran for 3 seasons on Nickelodeon and gathered an insane cult following in the process.

Today we get a brand new picture from the upcoming project and an official synopsis;

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

I am proud to say I have seen every episode of the original series from start to finish and can not be more excited for this new show. While it does have a brand new cast of characters, there seem to be enough ties to the original series to get fans excited. The synopsis above sounds solid and it will be fun to revisit the world of THE LAST AIRBENDER. Keep in mind, this is a sequel project for the animated series and NOT the M. Night Shyamalan (THE SIXTH SENSE, SIGNS) directed live action movie that hit theatres last summer. Not many more details are available now, but you can bet your ass I will have new details as they surface.

THE LAST AIRBENDER: THE LEGEND OF KORRA is slated for a release sometime in 2012.
