For a few weeks now there have been rumblings that Marvel was prepping a live action television series that takes place in the same universe as THE AVENGERS. Well, according to Deadline, that series will be titled S.H.I.E.L.D. based on Marvel’s famous peace keeping organization.
The pilot episode for this new show has apparently been green-lit and will air on ABC. The show will be co-written by Joss Whedon himself (THE AVENGERS, FIREFLY), his brother Jed (DR. HORRIBLE’S SING-ALONG BLOG), and Jed’s wife Maurissa Tancharoen (MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY). At this point. Joss Whedon will likely only co-write and possibly direct the pilot seeing how he will be very busy getting THE AVENGERS 2 in order. It is also worth noting that Marvel’s TV Head Jeph Loeb (THE AVENGERS: EARTH’S MIGHTIEST HEROES) and Jeffery Bell (ANGEL) will be executive producing the project.
With the pilot officially green-lit for ABC, chances are very high that the show will get picked up for a full season run airing as soon as Fall 2013. Keep in mind, there was a pilot for an AQUAMAN TV series back in 2006 that never received a full season run, but that character or franchise is nowhere near as popular or beloved as most anything in The Avengers universe. SO let’s keep our nerdy fingers crossed for this one! Stay tuned for any new information as it is released. I’m excited and can only hope that we will get a few cameos by some of the big heroes in the franchise such as Iron Man or (gasp) The Incredible Hulk!
