If you have not heard of this news yet my fellow nerds you need to listen up! The entire DC UNIVERSE is about to go through a complete reboot! Yes you heard me correctly, an ENTIRE reboot. That means that over 50 comic books are going to restart at #1 and all of the stories and characters you have grown up with are ALL starting from scratch. This is simply going to change nerd culture forever and cause a great deal of commotion among fans.

DC has confirmed that starting on August 31st all of your favorite DC comics will get a complete reboot and start from #1 all over again. From August 31st to the end of September, fans will be treated to a grand total of 52 brand new #1 comics to relaunch the entire DC Universe. These new issues will relaunch with brand new character designs, costumes, origin stories and more all geared towards a new and younger audience. Here is a little bit of what DC co-publisher Dan Didio told USA Today regarding the news:

“We looked at what was going on in the marketplace and felt we really want to inject new life in our characters and line. This was a chance to start, not at the beginning, but at a point where our characters are younger and the stories are being told for today’s audience.”

One of the very first issues of this revamp (released August 31st) will be JUSTICE LEAGUE written by Geoff Johns (GREEN LANTERN, BOOSTER GOLD) and drawn by fan favorite Jim Lee (X-MEN, BATMAN). DC has stated that all of their new books will not only be available in the classic comic book form but as a digital download as well in hopes to obtain more readers and a larger fan base. I think it is a smart move to have a digital release plan for all of their books and I ‘m sure it will pay off as more and more people are using digital media. The digital downloads will become available the same day as the printed comic books.

I have to admit that this is an extremely radical move on DC’s part and is a huge gamble. While I admire their bold refocus, I am sure millions of nerds out there are going to be crying over this massive overhaul. MARVEL did a similar thing with their “Ultimate” line of books years ago, but instead of making it the only option for readers they offered it as its own series that did not interrupt the current line of books or continuity.

I was never really into DC comics and consider myself a Marvel fan (X-MEN!) all the way. So I suppose this revamp is geared towards nerds like me who like a lot of DC characters but feel too overwhelmed by the long and convoluted history of most of the characters and worlds. I admit I would love to read a fresh new version of BATMAN and SUPERMAN where I don’t feel lost.

Check back for more news and possibly some reviews of these new books as they become available.
