SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Teaser Trailer!

Wow. I certainly did not see this coming. Sony/Columbia Pictures (with some Marvel back-up) are banking on you getting caught up in their web next Christmas with SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, a computer-animated movie that will bring fan-favorite and successor to the mask Miles Morales/Spider-Man to the big screen for the first time!  The film looks to be produced and written by Phil Lord & Chris Miller (21 JUMP STREET, THE LEGO MOVIE) and features the voice talents of Liev Schreiber (RAY DONOVAN), Mahershala Ali (LUKE CAGE), and Shameik Moore (DOPE) as Miles. But don’t worry, all of you...

TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN Full Season Review

Art by Mike McG NOTE: Some potential SPOILERS for hardcore Lynch/PEAKS fans await… TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN massively trolled its viewing audience…and I couldn’t be happier. For young’uns out there, TWIN PEAKS was an extremely popular primetime TV series that ran on ABC from 1990-1991.  Co-creators David Lynch (ERASERHEAD) and Mark Frost (HILL STREET BLUES) chronicled the many adventures of Special FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) after he is sent to the titular town to investigate the murder of local homecoming queen and town sweetheart Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee).  As he delves into the mystery, the very astute...

WONDER WOMAN (2017) Movie Review

Art by Mike McG Now was that so hard, DC? Following a mix bag of quality in their “Extended Universe” films ranging from a so-so MAN OF STEEL to the letdown of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE to the sheer “WTF?!”-ness of SUICIDE SQUAD, DC and Warner Bros. finally got all of the stars to align properly for one of their cinematic superhero tales…making it work not just as a movie, but as a great movie.  And it is so appropriate that WONDER WOMAN is now the gold standard of quality for DC and their film properties from...

POWER RANGERS (2017) Movie Review

It is astonishingly refreshing to view a superhero movie reboot with no preexisting deep connections nor substantial knowledge base of the original. I went into POWER RANGERS with absolutely no expectations. Batman and the Ninja Turtles were more my jam in childhood and all I really recall from the occasional episode I witnessed from the original Ranger TV show was that the heroes were generic interchangeable do-gooders. But even though this franchise isn’t necessarily my thing, I can appreciate and respect trying to take a campy premise and present a more mature or serious slant on it while trying to keep the spirit...

JUSTICE LEAGUE 1st Full Trailer!!!

After teasing us for the past few days with brand-new footage a few seconds-at-a-time of newcomers like the Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Warner Bros. finally unveiled their first full-length trailer for their upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE movie!  Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) are back to beat these new metahuman recruits into shape for the upcoming battle against what looks to be the dark forces of Apokolips.  I’m sure Henry Cavill is also bumping around in the movie as a freshly-resurrected Superman at one point…it just wouldn’t be a JUSTICE LEAGUE film...

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Movie Review

THE LEGO MOVIE is a tough act to follow.  It was an inventive, heartfelt and hilarious tale that could have easily been nothing more than a cash-in on a popular brand name.  It took the basic premise of the ever-expanding Lego toy line and actually injected it with an important (and self-aware) message of recognizing the exceptional in the mundane and to always have a little bit of imagination and child-like wonder tucked away.  And it marvelously utilized a colorful supporting cast consisting of both original and licensed characters…including a Lego-ized version of the Dark Knight himself (portrayed by...

LOGAN Movie Review

Be warned, spoilers ahead… It’s hard to believe that Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine would never have been possible if not for a last-minute schedule conflict.  Originally, Dougray Scott was cast in the role for Bryan Singer’s first X-MEN film back in 2000.  But due to his commitment to MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 overlapping with the shoot, Scott dropped out and Jackman was tapped to fill in only a few weeks before filming.  No small task considering that it was not only Hugh’s first-ever casting in an American feature film, but that it also just happened to be one of the...

ASSASSIN’S CREED Movie Review

Video game movies have never really had a fair shot, have they?  That’s at least how I see it.  Whether they’re hilarious train wreck adaptations of the source material (SUPER MARIO BROS., STREET FIGHTER) or entertaining and atmospheric B-movie spectacles that fall just short of being decent (MORTAL KOMBAT, RESIDENT EVIL series), I’ve always felt that relating the massive concepts of certain games (along with incorporating the look and mechanics of gameplay into an engaging plot) to the silver screen is a precarious balance that continues to elude filmmakers.  Prior to this movie, I’d say my preferred contenders for “most effective”...

BLADE RUNNER 2049 Announcement Trailer!

“I have seen things you people wouldn’t believe.”- Roy Batty I knew this was coming.  I’d heard the rumblings.  I’d heard about the return of Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott to the fold.  I’d heard that Ryan Gosling had LA LA LAND-ed a role.  I was excited.  But for some reason, I still never thought I would live to see the day… When it comes to daring science fiction films from the past, BLADE RUNNER is always at the forefront of my memories.  The STAR WARS and STAR TREK films are my go-to franchises for rousing space adventures, the...

Brand-New WONDER WOMAN Trailer! PLEASE BE GOOD!!!

As much as the entries in the recently-established DC Extended Universe have run the gamut of my emotions, ranging from “Meh, okay” (MAN OF STEEL) to “I’m conflicted” (SUICIDE SQUAD) to “Oh, Jesus, I need a drink” (BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE), I really want WONDER WOMAN to be a good movie.  It’s high time a powerful female superhero was given her own solo film franchise and if DC can beat Marvel to that punch and have it be successful, then it would make slogging through some of their lesser fare worth it. Gal Gadot definitely looks the part...

THE ACCOUNTANT Movie Review

NOTE: Some SPOILERS ahead! I kinda feel like this is how the propulsion of THE ACCOUNTANT to the big screen all went down: one day, Matt Damon bet longtime buddy Ben Affleck that he couldn’t manage his own version of either GOOD WILL HUNTING, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY or the JASON BOURNE series.  Affleck ups the ante by saying not only will he take on all of those properties combined, but he will play the lead role as a protagonist with high-functioning autism. Uhhh…checkmate, Damon.  Sorta.  Almost.  Well…it’s entertaining enough. The plot in a blurb: Affleck plays Christian Wolff, a...

IIIIIIIII’m…Hooked on the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Sneak Peek!

Break out your own personal “Awesome Mix” cassette tapes, folks!  Marvel Studios sprung a surprise “sneak peek” on us for director James Gunn’s sequel to 2014’s surprise hit blockbuster GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY! Sure, we’re only getting glimpses here and there of what the movie will be about (it is still many months away, so no need to spoil anything yet), but I’m loving what I’m seeing so far.  You got space-hopping in spaceships, Chris Pratt masking it up as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, lovely Zoe Saldana returning to kick many a buttocks as Gamora, the ever-entertaining (and awesome guy to meet...

New ROGUE ONE Trailer…Just Gimme The Movie Already!

Words escape me right now.  I was already jazzed enough for this flick to kick-off the STAR WARS Anthology series of films that would explore the stories within the original stories, but this new ROGUE ONE trailer has got me foaming at the mouth for December. That epic haunting orchestral remix of the STAR WARS theme, the massive amounts of intergalactic ground warfare, stoic Felicity Jones as a bad-ass, Mads Mikkelsen, Darth Vader lumbering through the smoke, bo-staff fighting and warrior Forest Whitaker hobbling into view on robot legs!  Hot damn, I am excited for this! ROGUE ONE: A...

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS Movie Review

Turtles.  It’s just…Turtles. This isn’t DEADPOOL with meta-humor and hilarious-yet-heartfelt vulgarity.  It isn’t BATMAN V SUPERMAN with a gritty visual palette and self-serious characters.  It isn’t even CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR or X-MEN: APOCALYPSE with globe-spanning superhero brawls and ever-expanding cinematic universes.  It’s TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS and it only has one agenda: to be stupid, entertaining fun.  And it succeeds in that endeavor. I’ve never expected epic genre-shaking storytelling from this franchise and I seriously doubt that the original creators and current head honchos have such lofty ambitions.  The original Mirage comics in the...

New 52 BATMAN #1-51 (The Snyder/Capullo Run) Comic Book Review

I’d be lying if I said DC Comics’ 2011 campaign to revitalize their stable of characters with a clean-slate reboot dubbed the “New 52” was a rousing success.  At best, it was a lukewarm endeavor that managed to wrangle some truly talented writers and artists onto books you never would have anticipated being made for brief periods of time.  At worst, the continuing series of retcon punches and off-model character motivations seemed to either drive away fans devoted to the previous longstanding continuity or confuse the hell out of the new readers.  Creative decisions like dissolving Superman’s marriage to...

Ladies & Gentlemen…Meet Your New HAN SOLO!

First-shooters rejoice!  Although it appears elderly Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford) is now lounging in that big Cantina in the sky following the events of THE FORCE AWAKENS, it seems that Lucasfilm and Disney have finally chosen their candidate to take on the legendary role in his own spin-off/prequel film.  After apparently searching through almost 2,000 actors, the new/young Han Solo will be portrayed by none other than Alden Ehrenreich most recently seen in the film HAIL, CAESAR!. I, for one, think this is an excellent choice.  No surprise that Ehrenreich was facing quite a bit of equally-talented competition...

First Look at New POWER RANGERS Reboot Suits!

I was never really a MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS kid growing up.  I got the basic premise: 5 teenagers are hand-picked by a benevolent alien force to do battle against an evil alien force by transforming into Japanese “super sentai” stock footage and calling upon their VOLTRON-like “battle zords” to blow up the monster-of-the-week…and maybe learn a moral or remember to recycle or something.  It was like the perfect amalgamation of everything cheesy and over-the-top from the 90’s: martial arts action in brightly-colored costumes, “hip” teenaged protagonists, Planeteer-levels of “friendship powers combining,” giant robots punching stuff and a bitching rock-anthem theme song....

TMNT: MUTANTS IN MANAHATTAN Video Game Announced with Trailer!

When it comes to videos games, the Turtles have have a hit-or-miss record.  On one hand you’ll have the classic cabinet arcade games and their equally successful console adaptations like TURTLES IN TIME.  On the other, you have the near-impossible original NES side-scroller and the more recent disappointment that was the visually-stunning but glitchy as hell OUT OF THE SHADOWS for Xbox Arcade.  Hopefully, Activision (creators of the awesome SPIDER-MAN 2 game adaptation) and Platinum Games (of BAYONETTA fame) will strike the right balance for a “hit” with the next installment TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: MUTANTS IN MANHATTAN: One...

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS Movie Trailer

No doubt: 2014’s reboot of the Heroes in a Half-Shell was a dumb movie, but it did end up making a ton of moolah at the box office.  In the vein of Michael Bay’s other “80’s nostalgia” property (TRANSFORMERS), a sequel was all but inevitable.  Enter TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS featuring the return of the four reptilian crime fighters, their reporter gal pal April O’Neil (Megan Fox), cameraman Vern (Will Arnett), the villainous ninja master Shredder (Brian Tee) and a few new faces. Check it out: Again, I’ll never quite understand how this is considered “raping...
